Twenty three year old in Qin Qin describes himself as a quiet bookish young man with a love of cakes and chocolates. So far, so ordinary. However Qin Qin is also severely mentally disabled and needs assistance with all aspects of his personal care.

Qin Qin attends Beijing Huiling which provides full time care and activities for him along with fifty other trainees in and around Beijing. From Monday to Friday the trainees live in group homes, where they learn life skills and take part in activities such as sport, music and art.

Currently the average cost of boarding is 800RMB per month and daytime activities cost 400 RMB per month. For Qin Qin’s father a construction worker who earns a monthly salary of 730 RMB a month, providing care for his son would not be possible without outside financial support.

Unfortunately Qin Qin’s family have had an especially difficult time as his mum suffered from cancer and needed expensive medical care until she sadly passed away at the end of January.

This is where the British Club/ Liz Robinson Fund have stepped in by establishing a charity design group to raise funds through the designing and making of cards and gifts. Christine Hocke, Angharad Gwen Thomas., Anne Anderson, Clare Jones and Lisa Pugh all contributed to the production of a The Christmas Gift Cards that were sold for 100rmb each at various venues around Beijing in December. The funds raised by selling the cards, with the generosity and support of the expat community, is enough to sponsor Qin Qin for another year at Beijing Huiling.
